South Eastern Utah Jr. Livestock Show

The show began in 1939 when FFA advisor Robert Dalhe organized the first show that was held on the tennis courts of the South Emery High School. The FFA chapters of Ferron, Huntington and Castle Dale were trying to decide what fat steers to take to the World’s Fair in San Francisco.

The FFA leaders were excited about the success of the show and decided to continue the event. They started the next few years exhibiting hogs, dairy and beef cattle, sheep and poultry. The show’s location rotated between Ferron, Castle Dale and Huntington.

In 1943 the show gained state wide attention and in 1944 committee members ad county commissioners decided that Ferron would be the permanent home of the show.  By 1945 improvements began and a 20x50ft wash barn was built. In 1946 the event was named the South Eastern Utah Jr Livestock show to represent Emery, Carbon, Grand and San Juan counties.

In 1947 construction of the 66x200ft stock show barn began. Over 100 yards of concrete was mixed by hand and poured for the foundation. Men used their wagons and horses to gather the rock from the creek bottom all the way back to the site to use for the cement.

The barn was dedicated in 1948 by Mayor Lewis W. Peterson. Since then the South Eastern Utah Jr. Livestock show has been held there every year, as well as the Castle Country Classic Livestock show which began in 2020. The South Eastern Utah Jr Livestock show is celebrating 85 years this year. Many, many 4H and FFA youth have participated in this show from all over the state of Utah. Today, the animal exhibits include Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Hogs, and Rabbits.

melon days

Melon Days is a multi-day community festival that celebrates the melon harvest that the city produces annually. To many it may come as a surprise that the community of Green River produces some of the world’s finest melons, as well as the diversity of melons that are grown in and around the city. The festival has been held in Green River for over 115 years, and while it has grown and changed over the years, some things have remained the same. This is and always will be a chance to taste some amazing melons, and celebrate the growers that bring them to market each year.

The two day festival features melon tastings, a visitor fair, pony rides, melon carving and so much more. Be sure not to miss the parade - it is truly like no other!
