Old Railroad

Grade

For history and pre-history buffs, this long narrow-guage railroad grade is a network of interesting evidence of past human use of the area.

The railroad grade was constructed in the 1880s and cost over $200,000. Built by local men, the route was to have stretched from Green River to Cleveland, a distance of 50 miles. However, faulty engineering estimates (the grade was determined to be too steep) led to the project being abandoned without on foot of tracks ever having been laid.

As you explore the trail, you will pass Native American rock art panels, including the Silent Sentinel, and the Daisy Chain, said to be made by the Fremont Culture.

For those that explore further, evidence left behind by the railroad workers of the 1880s can be seen at a site called "Railroad Rock" where men inscribed the rocks of the area.
